Monumental first edition from 1895, illustrated by the English artist Reginald Machell, a friend and personal interior decorator of the Russian mystic and Theosophy founder Helena Blavatsky. This friendship and his subsequent joining of the esoteric order Blavatsky founded, had a profound effect on the artist, which can be seen here in these dark gothic illustrations with strong occult undertones.

There are only two copies held by institutions worldwide. Notoriously rare, especially so with the original cloth portfolio.

First edition, large folio. Loose-leaf (523 x 419mm.) Half-title, title, 17 tinted plates incorporating the text mounted on 17 sheets. (Soiling to half-title, toning to margins.) Loose-leaf within original grey cloth-covered portfolio (worn, ties broken).

Published by Transatlantic Publishing Company, New York & London, 1895.

It was a real pleasure to work with Mr Oliver Bayliss, even from abroad, everything went so smoothly. You can consign your valuable books with confidence !
Oliver sold a book for me recently and the process couldn’t have gone more smoothly. Bayliss rare books are great to deal with and thanks to Oliver’s experience and salesmanship I was very happy with the final deal.
Highly professional service, extremely knowledgeable and easy to deal with, he's a collector first and foremost and you can see he cares.
Repeat customer. I've bought 4 books now from Oliver. Extremely knowledgeable in his field, he always has really interesting pieces in stock. He has hand delivered 2 of the books I have bought and sent the other 2 out by post. Would highly recommend.
