A book that needs no introduction. Can a collector say they have a serious collection if The Hobbit isn’t included? Certainly not. The Hobbit is essential to any important collection, especially when encountered in such fine condition as is found here.

An excellent first edition, first impression of The Hobbit – one of the most sought-after books in the world.

The first edition print run was limited to 1,500 copies and all were sold out in under three months of publication. This book features all requisite first issue points and features all the original black and white illustrations designed by Tolkien (what couldn’t the man do!)

Condition is key when it comes to The Hobbit, and this is up there with the very best a collector could hope for. The binding is in beautiful condition with the green cloth still vibrant. Internally it is incredibly fresh. In the condition report below, I delve further into this.

As a collector first, dealer second, I cannot recommend this example more. A strong and very shrewd investment book.

Description and Condition:

First edition, first impression. 8vo. Original publishers’ green cloth in cracking condition with next to no defects to mention bar some very, very, almost imperceptible fading to the edges but to be honest this is likely me just being a little pedantic. It’s a beautiful copy but always important to catalogue a book so that one perhaps can really visualise it even if not seeing it. There is also no dreaded shelf lean that blights this title. Small bump to the bottom right of the front.

Internally the book is fresh as anything. Very, very minor foxing to a couple of pages and bar that the pages are crisp and white. The map pastedown and endpapers are pristine. This book has received no restoration. The book block is holding firm, and the spine is great. Small bookplate to the half title depicting a farmyard scene.

Seriously, just buy it – you’ll be hard pressed to find a better copy.

It was a real pleasure to work with Mr Oliver Bayliss, even from abroad, everything went so smoothly. You can consign your valuable books with confidence !
Oliver sold a book for me recently and the process couldn’t have gone more smoothly. Bayliss rare books are great to deal with and thanks to Oliver’s experience and salesmanship I was very happy with the final deal.
Highly professional service, extremely knowledgeable and easy to deal with, he's a collector first and foremost and you can see he cares.
Repeat customer. I've bought 4 books now from Oliver. Extremely knowledgeable in his field, he always has really interesting pieces in stock. He has hand delivered 2 of the books I have bought and sent the other 2 out by post. Would highly recommend.
