Andy Warhol’s The Shadow depicts the artist himself as the mysterious crime-fighting hero from the 1930s radio show, reflecting his fascination with identity and mythology. Unlike his earlier works that fixated on contemporary celebrity, this piece belongs to Warhol’s later period, where he explored nostalgia and the construction of cultural icons. By stepping into the role of The Shadow, Warhol blurs the boundary between artist and subject, merging personal identity with the mythic figure. Part of his Myths series, The Shadow stands out as one of the few works where Warhol directly inserts himself into the realm of commercial iconography, reinforcing his lifelong preoccupation with fame and self-reinvention.

This piece is an offset lithographic color print on card, signed in white marker pen and stamped “Andy Warhol” on the verso. Published in 1981 in collaboration with Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, New York, it measures 17.8 x 17.8 cm. These prints were originally produced as promotional cards for Warhol’s Myths series rather than as formal limited editions, making signed examples particularly scarce.
