One of the most renowned 19th century 'papier mache' bindings, crafted to resemble carved ebony, typifies Gothic grandeur. This was the first of its kind and was designed by the author, drawing inspiration from the tomb of the Black Prince in Canterbury Cathedral. A highly sought-after gift book of the era, it is a near-pristine exemplar. A Gothicly dark binding indeed!

A timeless collectible that speaks to a bygone era, it is an invaluable addition to any antiquarian library.

First edition, original Gothic revival black moulded and pierced boards, in papier-mâché, simulating carved wood, with 6 chromolithograph plates, text in red and black. Replaced endpapers. A near-fine example.

Published by Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1849.
