Bayliss Rare Books was recently featured in The Guardian following the discovery of an exceptionally rare original proof copy of David Bailey’s Box of Pin-Ups (1965).

The proof came from the private collection of graphic designer David Hillman, who worked on the project with magazine editor Mark Boxer. It contains portraits of cultural icons including John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Jean Shrimpton, Michael Caine, Rudolf Nureyev, Vidal Sassoon and David Hockney. This version was the one shown to Bailey for final approval before publication, and its existence was previously unknown.

Plans for further editions were abandoned after Lord Snowdon objected to the inclusion of the Kray twins, a controversy that has only added to the work’s legend.

We offered the proof for sale at £25,000 to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Box of Pin-Ups. The publicity from The Guardian’s coverage sparked immediate interest, and the piece has now sold to a private collector.
